Journey of Shri Mohd Shafi Ahanger overcoming his physical challenges to solving community challenges
Born in a blacksmith’s family in a distant small village in Anantnag, J&K, Shafi had a childhood full of struggles, as he is physically challenged. Due to financial constraints, he discontinued his education after HSC. Overcoming his physical limitations, he started with mobile recharge shop. There itself people came to him for repairing mobiles. He himself learned to repair mobile by trial and error. But due to lack of right equipment, he found it difficult to do repair work. So, he thought of developing a PCB repairing device. Since childhood, he has been bright and had several ideas but due to financial constraints, he could not convert his ideas into practice.
In around year 2012, Shafi got in touch with scouts from NIF. With NIF’s support, he was able to develop prototype for PCB repairing device, for which he received National award at 9th National Grassroots Innovation Awards in the year 2017. This encouraged him to work on his other ideas solving challenges of people. One such pressing challenge in his area was of labour-intensive and time-consuming process of walnut peeling. Despite having no formal engineering education, he conceptualized and designed a cycle chain-operated small walnut Peeling Machine using locally sourced materials in year 2020. He realized chain operated machine consume time, so he designed a more user-friendly version. His innovation was awarded State Award at the 11th National Biennial Grassroots Innovations and Outstanding Traditional Knowledge Awards 2023.
